Eight Unconventional Steps to Landing an Interview

What is the number one way to land an interview? Have someone who works for the organization put in a good word for you. This can overcome a poorly written resume, inexperience, and almost all of the deadly sins that moves your application to the recycle bin. Chances are that you got a job or two using this strategy, never mind an interview!

So, how does this work in practice? Most people rely on random luck. They ask their friends, their friends know of a job, they put in a good word, and out pops an interview. However, the chances that one of your friends has connection for your ideal job are not high.

Here’s the recommended alternative:

  1. Get clarity about what you want to do.
  2. Research organizations who have people who do what you want to do.
  3. Make a prioritized list of companies you want to work for (40-50 is a good start).
  4. Are these organizations hiring? If yes, put those at the top of the list.
  5. Do you know people who work there? If yes, talk to those people! Will they put in a good word for you?
  6. Don’t know anyone who works for your ideal organization? Use LinkedIn to see if anyone from your school works there. The alumni connection is a powerful one.
  7. While you’re using LinkedIn, do any of your connections know someone who works there?
